Magnificent Monotony

It doesn’t happen often, but it does happen. At times, I look at life and the tedious samenesses and I flinch with groaning exhaustion. Images come to mind of the cursed Sisyphus perpetually rolling the boulder uphill only to have it roll down and begin again. I scream out like Joe, at the Button Factory—No more! (Click Here if you have never met Joe!) How did I get here? Dear Lord, why do I end up here in the Bay of Burnout, where the daily grind robs me of my joy and passion? Here, where daily chores and even the activities of ministry seem to keep dropping down faster and faster like Tetris game pieces, piling up until there is no room to move about the heaping pile of this mess. Come unto me all who are weary

You tell me, like Peter, I have taken my eyes off you (Matthew 14:22-33). And like Martha, I am busy about many things (Luke 10:38-42). I work. I study. I serve. But in the midst of all the ‘good’ things that I do, you tell me I forget the necessary thing.(Luke 10:41-42 ESV) Lord, help me to be still and spend time in your presence. Remind me of the fact that our view of you shapes our lives and so I must be about seeking to know you and not just about you. I want to abide on your vine. (John 15:4-5)  I want to know you truly, deeply and intimately. LH

Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly. Matthew 11:28-30 MSG

  1. Lisa—-What an awesome post!! Burnout is such a problem today—- so many demands, not enough time or energy each day!! “Be still and know that I am God”. A beautiful reminder.

  2. Hi Kiddo60!
“Coincidentally”, the morning after this post, The One Year Bible reading out of Isaiah 30 was this: This is what the Holy One of Israel says, “Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength. But you would have none of it. You said, ‘No, we will get our help from Egypt . . . So the Lord must wait for you to come to Him so He can show you his love and compassion. For the Lord is a faithful God. Blessed are those who wait for His help.”
