A Wall of Fire

Ok, this is what I’m talking about and why I started this website. Something will happen to me, I’ll have a conversation with someone or I’ll be thinking about something and then the very next time I read my Bible, God has something to say about it! Just like Moses knew God was talking to him when he saw the burning bush, it is like my own personal Burning Bush Sighting! I know He is talking to me because what I am reading relates precisely to whatever just happened! This happens too many times to just be a coincidence. So, I am making this a new category on this blog! Feel free to tell us about your own Burning Bush Sightings by using the comment box!

I recently was talking with a friend about temptation. My friend theorized that if there was just a wall that went up to block temptations we all would be just fine. I thought to myself, that would be nice and that was the end of the conversation. The next morning I was reading my Bible in Zechariah and this is what I read.

And I myself will be a wall of fire around it,’ declares the LORD, `and I will be its glory within.’

Zechariah 2:5

The context of this verse is discussing Zechariah’s prophecy over Jerusalem, but the point is clear according to the commentaries. There is security because of the divine protection (“a wall of fire around it”) and the divine presence (“its glory”). The “wall of fire” is reminiscent of the “pillar of fire” at the Exodus. Both are emblems of God and his protection and guidance. God is the sure and safe protection of his
people.  He went before the people of Israel in a pillar of a cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night.

Lord, be a wall of fire around us. Protect us and direct us. May we walk in the center of your presence so that temptations will not cause us to fall!
