Our youngest daughter is very unique. While many kids try to hide their disobedience or lie about what they have done wrong, she comes to us and asks to be punished. Just about nine times out of ten, no punishment is necessary due to her overly sensitive conscience. This morning as we waited for her school bus to pick her up, she decided to have another “Come to Jesus” meeting. (Tangent: Her “Come to Jesus” meetings are nothing like my childhood “Come to Jesus meetings”. Mine usually involved my mother, who had eyes in the back of her head, and a wooden spoon! Lord, may I run into your loving arms and repent rather than cover up my sin until the consequences are far more severe.)
I sat down in the livingroom chair next to her where we sit every morning watching for the bus, when she very directly said, “Mom, I need to be punished. Will you tie me to the bed?” As any parent would have been, I was greatly surprised and alarmed by her request. Fear gripped me. I began to question her “choice” of punishment more than what she thought she did to deserve it. To my VERY great relief, she informed me that was the punishment Naughty Nan, had chosen in a television episode of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Men. I then began to explain how that particular punishment probably wouldn’t fly in today’s world unless a parent wanted to be reported to Child Protective Services!
That conversation morphed into another conversation of how many things have changed throughout the years. Laws, technology, fashion and societal values . . . Well, look for yourself at some things that have changed over the years.

Hearing the school bus engine approach our house, I ended the conversation by saying, “Gratefully, there is one thing that never changes!” To which she replied, “Jesus!” Then I watched as she popped out the front door, hopped on the bus and rode off for school . . . never telling me why she thought she needed to be punished. 🙂
Lord, thank you that you never change (Malachi 3:6; James 1:17; Hebrews 13:8) and neither does your love (Romans 8:38-39; Ephesians 3:17-18) or your Word. (Matthew 24:35; John 1:1) As the song goes:
