In the day when I called, You answered me; and You strengthened me with strength in my inner self. Psalm 138: 3 AMP
This past Sunday, my husband and I decided to switch things up a bit. We ordinarily attend our church’s “contemporary” service which meets later and has more contemporary worship. We decided to go to the “traditional” service which meets at 9am. It is a little bit more liturgical and they sing hymns rather than contemporary choruses. It brought me back to my younger days–something I seem to enjoy a whole lot more as my biological clock ticks away!
I wasn’t anticipating the emotional response I experienced to one of the hymns we sang, God Of Grace and God Of Glory, which was played on the organ–something you just don’t see (or hear) much of anymore. As we sang the words, I kept thinking, WOW, even though this was written almost one-hundred years ago, the words seemed as if they could have been written today!
Because of everything going on in our world these days, I found my heart crying out the words. The song is such an amazing prayer, I decided to share the words on betteroffread.com.
God of grace and God of glory
God of grace and God of glory, on thy people pour thy power;
crown thine ancient church’s story; bring its bud to glorious flower.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the facing of this hour,
for the facing of this hour.
Lo! the hosts of evil round us, scorn thy Christ, assail his ways!
From the fears that long have bound us free our hearts to faith and praise.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the living of these days,
for the living of these days.
Cure thy children’s warring madness; bend our pride to thy control;
shame our wanton, selfish gladness, rich in things and poor in soul.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, lest we miss thy kingdom’s goal,
lest we miss thy kingdom’s goal.
Save us from weak resignation to the evils we deplore.
Let the gift of thy salvation be our glory evermore.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, serving thee whom we adore,
serving thee whom we adore.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage for the living of these days
for the living of these days.
Wisdom, blessings and strength to you, dear reader. LH
